Mate,
did you clean all the rocker assembly, the oil galleries inside the rockers can block causing a tapping noise.
After pulling apart my 3.9 V8 for the second time to replace to the camshaft and followers, I was delighted to find that it ran superbly.
600km later, one of the followers has started to rattle below 1900 rpm, when the oil is hot. If I leave it turned off for about 10 minutes and allow the oil to cool a bit, the sound goes away, which makes me think that one of the followers is leaking, rather than a worn camshaft lobe like last time. I am using Penrite Gas oil 20w 60.
So can anyone help with a magic cure so that I don't have to pull the blasted thing apart again?
I did think of using a heavier oil such as Penrite 40 or is there such a thing as an oil additive that actually works? I don't think dirt in the engine is the culprit as I was extremely careful to avoid that happening,
Cheers Charlie
Mate,

Pull the offending side rocker cover off and start her up.
Should give you a good idea where the noise is coming from and what sort of oil flow you are getting up top.
Position the cover over the top of the exhaust manifold to catch drips.
Start it up when cold to keep the smoke and fire risk down.
Check your tappet/lifter clearances you might need to shim things.
1 good possibility is .....
