    alternator problems 300tdi

    hi guys

the battery light came on on the way to work this morning

its a 300tdi defender with 100amp disco alternator fitted

alternator is only a few years old, i have check/wiggled the wiring with no luck, measures 12 volts at alternator when engine is running, 12V at battery with engine running, 12V at alternator when i turned the engine off

i tapped the alternator a few time with mag light...still no go

can the alternator be overhauled or am i up for a new one??

    its my daily driver

yes, it can be but unless you have a tamed sparky its quicker (and IMHO more cost effective to just drop in a replacement one then DIY rebuild the old one as your spare.

At the start of the year the rectifier in 110 alternator died. My auto electrician was talking ~$240 to overhaul the whole thing with new bearings, etc, but suggested a new 65A one for $220. I took the new one but regretted it pretty quickly. It takes a bit of revving on start up to get the charge light to go out and it looks and "feels" far inferior to the 100A one I bought from Paddock Spares shortly after (for less than the cheap one of course).

Damn. You could have always borrowed Captain Snooze's alternator while you wait. His Defender is never running .
