Thread: 300 tdi thermostat whining?

Hi all,

I noticed yesterday after arriving home from work a funny whining that seemed like it was coming from the thermostat housing. But I have never heard a thermostat make any noise before.....

After I had stopped the engine for 5 mins i fired it back up and the noise was gone, making it seem like it was temp related, but it seems totally bizarre to me.

Any ideas?

Sound does bonce around at the front of the 300tdi. Try the old piece of garden hose thing to isolate the noise - more like the tensioner bearing maybe on the verge of needing replacement. Unless it was very hot, and the AC fans did their boost thing ( ie tripped the 2nd switch on the elbow)
