AFAIA it is the same a ZF4HP22
My question is: regarding the D1 ZF gearbox.....
Is the gearbox used in the V8 any different from the one used with 300 tdi ?
- if it is different - what are the points of difference ?
thanks
AFAIA it is the same a ZF4HP22
different ratios in petrol and deisel
so.... do you know what they are ?
(RAVE indicates differing lock-up and change speeds tdi/V8, so I can understand Tank's comments but RAVE gives no reference as to ratios)
if it is just valving -does anyone know if a simple valve block change enables a ZF that was in a V8 to be installed in a tdi ?
(because 2nd hand ZFs that are/were in V8s are available very cheaply)![]()
one of the projects Ive got on the side is a semi dead v8 auto that I was going to strip down to show how it all works...
if youve got a TDi one down there and it can be gotten to here then Im happy to lay spanners on to find out whats different where.

as a temporary fix you can use a slip stop additive

Lucas automatic transmission additive stop slip | eBay
Lucas Automatic Transmission Fluid Conditioner - 591ml | eBay
it'll help put off the inevitable...
you might get lucky and find that the "slipping" is actually the TCLC on the way out which means if you do an oil sample and its got fine black floaties in it a fluid change to prevent further damage will allow you to just replace the TC without having to rebuilt the box.
relying on those addatives is just going to make the final repair cost higher as the damage done will be greater.

Definitely check if its just the TC lockup clutch slipping. Had that same problem on mine and got the converter overhauled with heavy duty clutch and some other improvements for a bit over $300 (couple of years ago) and I did the R+R.
Was still going fine when I sold it a few months back.
The auto trans places were talking trans overhauls for $3-4K....
In Melbourne I can recommend Autoflite Engineering in Thomastown who did mine. Great to deal with and turned it around in a couple of days.
