Working my way through a 160k service ... D2.

Change the auto fluid today. Did it a 120k and used Valvoline ATF DX-III, and changed it 4 times over around 500km to flush the whole auto out ... the oil was pretty crap when dropped, looked like it was well overdue, so filled and drained numerous times to get as fresh a start as possibe ... fitted a new filter too.

The last 40k it has run sweet. Smooth changes & TC lockups. No leaks.

I dropped the fluid again today. 4.5L out, and it looked really clean, still red translucent, smelt good, and only slightly darker than when put in. I replaced it with 4.5L of Castrol Transmax Z. So it's about 50/50 old and new ATF.

Now the service schedule says auto oil change every 40k. Took me 2.5yrs to do 40k.
The Castrol product literature says in respect of oil changes ...

Extended drain interval in heavy duty automatic transmissions

* City and Suburban service 100,000km or 2 years
* On-Highway 300,000km or 2 years

I'm a City / Suburban service kinda guy ... would you really run a ZF 4HP22 100k between oil changes on Transmax Z ?

Add in some off-road driving / beach, etc ... no towing, and a 50/50 mix of 40K old and new ATF ....

... and you would schedule your next ATF change for how many kms ??

The stuff's not cheap, so no point changing it sooner than need be.
