Drop the diff oil, see if there is enough volume there, and that it isn't full of glitter or water. Fresh oil is cheap!
Defender tD5 2005
I have a winning noise (or humming noise) coming from the front or maybe clutch.
It gets more noticeable every time I slow down to stop and it disappears.
Mechanic doesn't know what's causing it but thinks it could be diff related.
I wonder if it could be clutch related. My clutch has a common problem, there is a washer in it that makes a noise when I start first thing in the morning, then it goes away. This apparently is common and nothing to worry about, but the winning noise I hear as I stop it's getting me worried.

I just replaced my back diff in our 06 Defender because of a whining noise - really apparent when slowing down. I couldn't see anything wrong with the diff I removed, but the noise disappeared instantly. The noise started ages ago and I didn't think it serious, but for peace of mind.
This is in a vehicle with 95,000kms on the clock and had 4 oil changed in the diff since new.

It sounds like the same problem as mine. Mine has 140.000 Km.
If it's the Diff (as the mechanic also suggested) I was thinking of replacing it with a stronger unit.
Again the mechanic suggested putting a rear diff at the front because they are stronger.
I thought of putting a Salisbury but they don't seem to make them for the front diffs.
Any thoughts ......???????
