    Diff locks....the ultimate solution

Right, the glove has been thrown down...I just got back from a weeks camping on the coast with some mates, we travelled in a new landcruiser wagon, and despite my pathological hatred of all things Toyota (and nissan, mitsubishi...etc etc) I had to say that we takled some tough terrain and never once looked like getting stuck......Im not going to join the dark side, that Toyota was worth $75k and had quite a few issues....burning oil and odd wheel tracks to mention a couple. But I am going to invest in some lockable diffs, now my question is which one is best? There must be some very qualified opinions out there so Im asking for some feedback...Ive a 110 Defender 200tdi and a series 1 disco with the dreaded 300tdi...Im considering swapping the best of both into one also....are the discos diffs and tranny a suitable solution to the defenders road slowness?

I wont say they are the best as I dont know which are, but I will say that I have had faultless service from my ARB lockers F&R and would fit them again in a second.

I have had them for well over 10 years and they have been used many many times

stick with the defender diffs if the rear is a salsbury super strong.

    Hi Hellonwheels,

It wasn't clear from your post if you wished to build the 110 or the disco series 1. I assumed the 110 from the suggestion to swap stuff onto the 110.

I have a 110 with the salsbury rear. I installed a maxi rear locker and axles. MR automotive are building them again. From my mechanic's complaints the attention to detail in the little things are not the same as when Mal sold them. That all said, it has been faultless and I'd not hesitate to put a maxi in the front. The only issue is the expense of the install which is about 10 hrs of labour. If you outsource the install budget $2,800 to $3,000 for an installed rear maxi locker, axles and flanges.

Ashcroft have just released a range of air lockers but the salsbury is still in development (from the mutterings of forum members). If you are inclined to go air lockers, I'd wait for the ashcroft kit. Sounds pretty smick. The literature suggests that they remedy the complaints people have with the ARB design.

Don't forget the Detroit locker, from all accounts they are more liveable than the earlier generations. Cheaper option than maxi or ARB or Ashcroft.

Whatever you choose, don't put a locker without upgraded axles. Unless you like changing axles trackside.

    cheers MLD

na the 200tdi, leaves the 300 for dead in the long life stakes.

same money = same power from eather. any more and you need a turbo swap for the 200 and for the 300 you need to pinch bits off the 200
