    Intermittant viscous failure?

    '95 RRC.
    Last Saturday morning I had a couple of random temperature rises. Temp gauge was normal, then suddenly started climbing towards the top. Each time (3x) I noticed it and shut down the air-con, stopped, popped the engine hatch and ran at a fast idle for 3 to 5 minutes.

    Previously I'd been crawling up some rock tracks, a/c off (windows open) with no problems, the first time was on a 60km/h gravel track.
    Yet idling for 15 minutes with air-con was fine...
    Yes, it was around 38 to 40 degrees.

    Does this sound like the viscous fan hub ? - Or the condensor fans switching off for no good reason... - Possibly jealous of my attention being lavished on the fuel-tank leak, the reason for cutting shrt my little trip...

    Or maybe its decided to go out in sympathy with the other viscous coupling....

    suspect viscous coupling fan

    Mate, I have a 95 130 TD4 which was having heating issues coming home up greenmount Grt Eastern Hwy each day, oil pressure dropping, temp getting almost into the red even on a cool day, mind you I dont take it easy maintaining 90km/hr in 5th. Anyway, ended up biting the bullet, replaced radiator, water pump, thermostat, and hoses only to have same issue. Much concern thinking the head was stuffed, I thought I better try the viscous fan. $300 and a five minute job and havent had an issue since. Do it before the rest I say.

    If it cools down rapidly with the load off, or an increase in speed, then it is a good bet that the thermostat and radiator are working well.

    I agree with Swivel; change the viscous coupling. If it is working properly you will hear it come on even at high road speed. If you haven't heard a roaring noise yet, then it isn't working,

    Did it again yesterday. Once more, with the air-con running (warm day) and around 80km/h with the breeze on the port quarter which may or may not have a bearing on things...
    Turned off the A/c, and it soon made its way down to normal, re-engage the A/c and the gauge started moving up... turn it off and back down. Pretty conclusive the A/c is heating things too much.

    Nope, did'nt notice any roaring...above the road/engine noise, though I'm 51%confident the twin condensor fans come on with the A/c. - They do with the IGN & A/c switch ON and engine not running.
    They're also supposed to be triggered by high coolant temp as well, sort of 'extra' air supply for the radiator even when the A/c is not in use.

    Now that you mention it, when I drove off this morning, there was no fan roar as it normally does for several seconds...
    -- I suspect you're both right...

    Anyway, measured the nut and its 36 mm. (The one between the VC and the pulley, behind the fan, the other nut is 102cm.)

    I still reckon its going out in sympathy with the transfer case VC....

    viscous couplings can fail intermittantly its to do with either oil loss or degredation of the internal workings over time.

    Reckon its the silicon degrading with age/use/owner's disposable income...

    Does anyone know if a viscous from a 300 Tdi is the same as the serpentine - 3.9 V-8 ? -I've been offered one. Owner assures me it has a 36mm nut.... - Much appreciated, though there's no point in me having it IF it's not the same! - Even I draw the line at pointless hoarding. Sometimes.

    V8 serpentine engine is RH thread, tdi is LH thread. Also, Tdi is a smaller 32mm nut.

    Certainly, ERR2266 is the part you are after
    ERR3443 is the V8 serp model fan clutch, ERR4996 is the P38a one whichh WILL fit the D1 V8 BUT will almostr never freewheel as it is used to drive a huge fan.

    James, if it's the same as the V8 per serpentine, I have an almost new one here. Came off after I did the thermo conversion and had only been on for about 6 or so months after being replaced from a close encounter of the Skippy kind.
    Has the fan blade on it however I did drop it and broke the blade but the hub is fine. Genuine unit too.
    Has the number on it, will have a look.
