Hi Alex do a search it's been covered before. The tie down rings are just that, Dangerous to try and snatch from them
G'day All - how do i best fit recovery points to the front & rear of a series II Discovery? I don't want to use the tiedown rings A I reckon there is now way they'd stand up to a snatch recovery.
Any advice gratefully received.
Cheers,
Alex

Just use the rear tow bar as your recovery point - strap into the hole and pinned, not the tow ball. For the front, there are a number of companies that do good front recovery points. Mine were 4x4intelligence ones, however they have since closed up shop. Try troutbeck.

Have a look in the Recovery section, Regards Frank.
Question out of ignorance, has anyone had a failure using the tie down points or able to calculate the expected rating of these? I have a bull bar to pull off but wondering?
I was told that a Prado owner had his front pulled off when using the prado tie downs ie the chassis failed at some other point. Yes a playdough!
Frequently recoveries are made with a big run up and full stretch of the snatch strap asking for potential disaster, when a gentle nudge will get things going and only a small escalation in ergs required if first pull not enough.
I also use the tow bar with a recovery receiver( a slide in alloy one that a shakle goes into).
For the front I got a pair from Philco....http://www.aulro.com/afvb/verandah/1...ery-1-2-a.html
Philco made an announcement early-mid last year that he was going overseas and production was ceasing until he returned. I havent seen any posts or activity to suggest he's back.Originally Posted by alien d2

I got two front ones from 4 x 4 Design. Not cheap at $95 ea from memory, but look the part. Link is ww.4x4de.com. I had to cut my wombat guard to fit them, but that saved having to consider their matching steering arm guard for the moment.
Check out the posts in the "Verandah" setion in the post by Philco, esp. the last posts, there is also a pic of Tombie's Swivelling recovery points, much safer than any recovery points that has horizontal shackle pin holes, Regards Frank.

If you want to use the receiver make an upgraded pin. 16mm or 5/8" 4140 round steel rod sets you back about $5- at Edcon steel for enough to make a new one plus another $1- for a 6mm lynch pin to secure it. A quick hit with a butane torch to bend the end over and off you go.
I made my own receiver hitch to suit 6.5T shackles and pin as above and on a test rig the standard towing pins deform with a strap only at around 2T and bend enough to need to be cut out from the receiver hitch at about 2.8T.
