What's the going tyre of the year?

Hey all I know we always starts these thinngs over and over BUT things change quicker then we use them.

What is everyones best wearing tyre at current?

Need to replace the AT with some big 265/75R16 MT looking at the goodyear MTR's and BF KM2's at main,
dads got the goodyears had them for 2 years worked a treat till last trip got wall damge but has been using them on road alot recently which will wear them down.

the prices I have got are very close both at the $350 fitted so its more best of the two for the job, hit the rocky Vic high country 80% of the off road work then Wombat mud in the winter for a play.

Got any comments always listening to sugestions.

D2 with a 50mm lift TJM winch front bar rear will go one day if that helps

I think you're on the right track there and believe that these are the two benchmark tyres for what they are.

The BFG is common, works well, effective and sexy tread pattern with an excellent heritage.

The MTR with Kevlar should be the benchmark carcass, its a silica based tyre which allows better traction with less wear and I belive that despite the critics of the assymetrical tread pattern, its actually a very well thought out tread design.

I've spent a lot of time pondering about which one is better. Personally I think the BFG is excellent and looks the best and there is not much between them, but I would probably buy the MTR as it has the strongest carcass, silica compounds and through beaurepairs you can get a pro-rata warranty against punctures even for offroad work.
    Cheers

    Hi Krayzie,

Agree with Slunnie - you cant go too wrong with either.
We currently run the Goodyears on our D1. It is the family wagon and play truck so does a lot of road km's. approx 45,000k on them now and should get to 70 (I hope).
I have just replaced a set of BFG KM2's on my work ute (alas only a hilux) and i was really impressed with them too. I work in the forest industry so they had a good mix of bitumen, gravel, mud and no tracks at all during fires - these were replaced at 75K. Worked amazingly well in the wet too. Im now back on Coopers due to "agreed suppliers" and whilst these are great tyres too - of the previous 5 sets of STT's ive had, 50-55k is the norm for replacement for my driving.
    Cheers

I've been BFG MTs for years , and they do have a long life and have not had punctures

but take a look at Maxxis Bighorns - substantial price savings over BFGs

I've had an Maxxis AT version on a Nissan Pathfinder for a year or so with no balance, unusual wear or tracking issues - I don't know about life but if they only lasted half the time of BFGs they'd be good

I need to soon get tyres for the D1 and I'm thinking the Bighorns will fill the bill.

Five years ago I put a set of Nang-Kangs (think that's how you spell it) 33x12.5x15 Mudstars M/T on my Disco have travelled well over 40,000klms (odometer doesn't always work probably 50K+), they have worn well, at least 1/2 of the tread left. About 80% off road as I live only a few K's from some of the best trails around, occasional trip to ACT and Sydney. No chipping or cuts, never had a puncture (knock on wood), no problems on tarmac wet or dry and back then they cost $175 fitted and balanced, which was a good $100/$150 cheaper than anything else available.
My next choice would be Pirelli Scorpions M/T, used to be reasonably priced, don't know about now though. Don't be afraid to look at Aisian (Korea/Japan) tyres, Kuhmo, Hankook and the like, all I ever used on my interstate trucks, Regards Frank.

The Kuhmo MT's run around $80-90 cheaper than the Maxxis but from asking around a few suppliers you get a corresponding reduction in life. Apparently quite good at resisting chipping and general shoulder rounding wear, just not as long lived and correspondingly cheaper.

I know alot of people have issues with them but my 2x rear Cooper S/T's are now just over 90,000km without any issues (fronts have 30k). Still have decent tread depth left ... Two punctures, both tek screws ... one in the driveway, one on a building site. I'd say they have a comfortable 20k left ... 70/30 on/offroad.

255/70*16 ... they don't make them in this size any more ...

My experience with them is a big two thumbs up ... ymmv ...

My personal experiences with Coopers, 2 year old tyres already on a Disco I owned were cracked around where the lugs met with the sidewalls, took them to a local dealer and he sent pics to Cooper who said my fault for running too low a pressure.
A mate lost a section of tread in the middle of a Cooper tyre the size of a bread and butter plate and also had the same cracks as mine, Coopers denied liability. My Son's Disco fitted with Coopers A/T handles so badly on wet roads that he won't drive if it's raining.
Last but not least Coopers mileage warranty is void if you buy and/or use their tyres outside of major metropolitan areas, if the manufacturer has no confidence in their off-road tyres why should anyone else, Regards Frank.

I was in the workshop at Inaminka geting some heater hose for my landie after one of them split on the way there was a bloke there on his way to Birdville with a flat Cooper tyre. The woman there was not impressed by Cooper tyres and said the only ones that survive out here are BF Goodrich. I have had them on my truck for 10 years now and have had a realy good run out of them We also run them our fleet of work vehicles for coal mine site work. We went to these after too many flat Cooper tyres and the few other brands they we tried.
