Disco 1 Torque Converter lock up

Hi im after some information on the lock up function in our autos. I live in the Adelaide Hills and the speed limit is 80 kmh.
As you can imagine im lugging around in top gear with the TC (Torque Converter) locked or revving too high in 3rd. So my question is can the TC lock up speed (80 kmh) be adjusted or can it be turned off by installing a switch some where in the system so i can be in top gear with the TC unlocked and still have the option of switching it back on when cruzing on the flats.

    Thanks
    Dave

D1 are mechanical - No switching option...

    What engine? TDi or V8?

At 80km/h in 3rd what revs are you pulling?

Thanx for that. D1 TDI 300. I think is doing around 2750 at 80. I thought because it all ways locks at 80 if its in top gear it must get a reading from the speedo, but was just a guess. Thanx for clearing that up

    Thanx

auto V8's do the same thing,
why the hell LR done this beats me, real pain when towing as well, it's either lugging or reving, no in between
there is a fella in melbourne who can kit a valve body so you get lock-up in 3rd gear, but for the bux unless your always towing, i didn't bother. i just learnt to sit on 77 KPH in an 80 zone.

Being in SA where we have more tolerance than Vic... Sit on 85

    Cant provide much more help...

However, Intercooler upgrade, and proper pump tweak / tune should see it "lug" nicely in top gear...

try adjusting the kickdown cable, slacking it off will promote earlier lockups but also induces earlier shifting, not bad for on the flat but a right PITA if you tow or go up hills.

And also reduces line pressure, bad idea

    A fuel up should help

A fuel tweak does help but if you hit inclines doing 1750 @ 80 you find you need to sink the boot pretty hard and it'll produce some high EGTs. Easy enough to blow 750 if its a sustained hill and a hard[ish] tune. I tend to now just fall back to 78 or so and use 4th unlocked with much lower EGT.

If I have my 34s on, the car will not accelerate once the lockup drops in. I can floor it and watch the EGTs rapidly take off but the speed doesn't change gutless POS. Have to take it to at least 90 in third and then into D.

Sounds like im stuck with it. Yep gutless POS but I love it all the same.

I will have a go at adjusting the kick down to make it hold 3rd a bit longer may be.

What about the holes where the kick down cable goes, is that the place to adjust it?

    Thanx
    Dave
