Cleaning smoke smell out of D1

I recently bought a 92 tdi discovery and the previous owner was a smoker, it smells like he never opened the windows while doing so, the roof lining seems stained by tobacco and all of the interior could do with a good clean.

What methods have you used to clean an interior really well? any secrets?

You will never get the smell out of the vents piping unless you remove it and clean the vent system.
The headlining can't be successfully cleaned without destroying it. It will need replacing.
I was advised by a ex taxi drive in the 1970's about a product called Dissol, not the premixed squirter bottle , but the concentrate, mix it up with water and vinyl will clean like new. I tried it and it works a treat.
There are tobbacco odour products avail at auto shops but you will always get a good whiff of the smell even after using it..
I'd never buy a car from a smoker. Why drive someones ashtray.
A non smoker will always pick up the stench where a smoker would not even smell it.
I wish you luck and it will take some detailing.

Use that D1 as a trade in, sorry, I am a non smoker as well.

The hood lining would be the worst and the best way to tackle that would be to get it relined, they do sag after a while, so relining it would kill two birds with the one stone.

Just imagine what condition the inside of his lungs must be in.

    Take up smoking...

The smell will also have permeated the seat foam as well as the fabric, air-conditioner heat exchanger - our Mazda still has a faint whiff on start-up, after 16 years - and as mentioned, the ductwork.

Great excuse to pull the dash out...

    My deepest sympathies.

Try Fabreeze furniture deodouriser, will probably need a few tins over a month or two, turn the air vents to "outside air" and with the blower fan on spray Glen 20 into the plenum in front of the windscreen, it will take a few goes, though.
Also try putting a few drops of ( I was going to give you the name of a product I used on the pollen filter in my BA GT, but the label has worn off and there is no name, the wife thinks it started with "NIL....."). It comes in a very small bottle about 25mm wide and about 40mm high, the bottle is green with a black top, we either bought it at Autopro or Supercheap. It is a very potent deoderiser, you only put one or two drops on a piece of cotton gauze and put it in one of you air ducts. Spray the fabreeze on seats, carpets and head lining, regards Frank.

Look into renting or paying a visit to a detailer who has a Ozone generator.
I was told (by the rep) it should preferably left overnight and will get into almost every nook and cranny

I don't know alot about it but worth looking into.

Niloder wil make his eyes water, it's just as bad as crushing up urinal lollies and tipping them down someones air intake.
    use it sparingly. Potent
It will mask the smell, but won't remove it.
Fabreeze etc etc, I've tried all that and it doesn't remove tobacco smell.
Get a hot day and the smell of tobacco comes back. Turn on the A/C and the smell is in there too.
I used to smoke. I didn't really become aware of how foul tobacco smells until I gave it up.
you smell it on peoples clothes.

Put some small trays of baking soda under the seats and wherever else you feel the need. Empty them each day and replenish until the pong goes away.

You can sprinkle it onto fabric and carpets and vacuum it off the next day and repeat as above,

    Cheers Charlie
