very inexpensive digital temp gauge

thermocouple is the term you want.

simply take the existing thermocouple, insert it into a ring crimp terminal and expoxy resin it in place. Use one with an insulation cover on it if its going to be allowed to swing on something so you can see it easily and without if you want a faster reading on it.

I drove the car for the first time today after fitting the gauge.

It runs about 91-93 C after warming up, no difference with aircon on on a 26c or so day.
It tends to change a lot from 90.something up to 93 , then down on override etc.

This raises the question to me whether an 88C thermostat just starts to open at 88C or is fully open. My guess is that it just starts at 88C and is fully open at 92-93.
I have never been able to find anything in writing that specifies this.

T/stats temp rating is always an opening temperature, and according to Tridon, maximum lift/fully open is usually around twelve degrees above the crack temp.

I tested quite a few thermostats last year and was surprised to see that the number stamped on each one was the opening temperature. I say I was surprised because I'd just assumed that it was the fully opening temperature. When I put a thermostat back into the V8, I'll use a 74 degree one since there's no ECU to keep happy.

shame it maxes out at 110 would have been "Cool" for the ZF transmission

The device shown on ebay (with digital readout) only measures one item at a time unless you plan on making a switch but you will most likely need to use the same thermocouple (or thermistor) and also the same length of the cable otherwise the resistance may give you a false reading.

Not sure how the system works or requirements for calibration but the device really is only set-up to measure one item.

I have used thermocouples before to test concrete temperatures when setting. Needed to stay under 80 degrees C.

Yep - I thought I'd have an "A/B" switch on the dash to flick between the two.

If they are not identical thermocouples, any thoughts on how far out they'd be? if it is just a degree that is fine, but obviously 5 or 10 degrees out is an issue.....

Call me a girly blouse, but I really want an outside temperature reading on my Defender, as I've gotten used to having this info on my Rangie! One way for radiator temp, the other way for outside temp. Anyway - that's what I'd like if possible.
