    LT77 gearbox question

    Hi everyone,

I just have a quick question. I need to know if there is a difference between the LT77 gearbox in a Discovery and a LT77 gearbox in a Defender?

I have been offered a Defender at a very reasonable price, but it has a blown gearbox, so I am just working out my options and if it is worth buying.

    Thanks Jeff

the shifting setup... interchangable between the boxes from memory.

ones got long stick (the deefer) and the discos got short stick

For spelling call Rogets, for mechanicing call me.

However I believe that you have to dissassemble the box to change over the internal selectors, and that is going to cost almost as much as a gearbox re-build.

Also, IIRC the Defender LT77 has a shorter bellhousing and therefore a shorter primary pinion than does the Disco LT77.

I'd be looking for a Defender R380 rather than another LT77.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

The R380 would need a different bellhousing then to bolt to the motor wouldn't it? Then the clutch assembly???

IS there a reason why the Disco Lt77 couldn't be fitted and the gearshift modified externally?
    Cheers

if you have both boxes you can make one out of the other providing they are of the same suffix. (I blew the reverse gear teeth off the layshaft in a 92 disco and got sent a deefer box)

    Hi Simon

I asked that question of Ward at Cooper's about an R380 and his reply is that you have to install the correct selectors as your building up the box. From that I can only conclude that you have to strip the box at least partially to swap them over.

The other option would be to merely use a Disco box in a Defer and rebuild the transmission tunnel around it. A lot of people prefer the short throw Disco stick movement. The bell housing length may still be an issue.

Hi Jeff, the fact that the box is gone is that it is an LT77. It isn't a strong box! I run an LT85 in my county with a 4.4 terrier V8 and my Father a 4.6 rover V8. Strongest box that Land Rover has made and all the gears would be aprox twice the size. Don't know if you would get a bell housing to fit the TDI though?? I would suggest an R380. Haven't seen in side one of them but have a 77. The LT230 case which would be behind it will bolt straight up to either box. Tim

i had a stripped LT77 output shaft and stripped input gear on LT230 when i got my first D1 '91 V8

    i was sold and fitted myself a D2 V8 R380 with another D1 LT230

i used the original main gear stick level and pivot plate it goes through plus the original LT230 shifter stick and box on the new R380 box

not that any of this is defender related...

    Hi All
I am new to the LR terminology. I am currently babysitting my cousin inlaws backpacking 93 disco tdi200 manual 5spd.
5th gear went the day before he took off to NZ. All gears fine except when I select 5th there is nothing except a free revving engine.
What is the best option to fix this. I am in South Australia.
    Thanks in advance
    Cheers Reyni
