    RRC high idle my answer.

I have been having trouble with getting my idle down since fitting new injectors and cam a few months ago. I replaced the stepper a couple of times and still the damn thing had high idle.

Yesterday I was fitting the sender for the "inexpensive temperature gauge" I noticed that the vacuum hose to the fuel carbon canister and aircon doors was disconnected. In my defence it was under the booster hose.
Pushed it on and the it has a perfect idle today.

It reinforces my belief that a lot (most?) of the V8 high idle problems on this forum are vacuum leaks, with a proportion being stepper, but stepper problems are usually slow reaction causing stalling rather than high idle.

Goes to show that even the most perfect of us can miss the obvious.

    Regards Philip A

I find with good hearing I can easily zero in on significant vacuum leaks. Lots of times I have found a vacuum hose off within a moment of lifting the hatch.

The other day a nice gent with a CL Valiant on gas stopped by, complaining about very poor idle. Even before he opened the bonnet I could hear a pulsating vacuum leak that matched the engine shake. As soon as the bonnet lifted I could see the carby doing a wild dance as the screws holding it together were falling out.
