    Running different tyres (manufacturer)

I have been running 265/75/16 A/T's of a brand not readily available in Oz.
At the time the price was right and the tyres looked pretty good.

I have since done about 30k and wear and performance has been ok however I now have a plug in one of the rears and would like to replace it.

My problem is that the tyre place I got them from no longer stocks them or can get them.

So my question is, can I run the same size tyres but different manufacturer on the front and keep the best of the exotic brand on the back and a spare?
They are Wild Spirit TXR2's and they were a bit too expensive to just throw away.

Also does anybody know where I could get them as it may be worth buying some and shipping them up here.

    Cheers,
    Paul.

My guess is that your biggest issue would be dia. If you can find a brand locally that is a very close match in dia, then I think that would be ok.

If it was me, I'd just make sure the same tyres were on the same axle.

This raises the possibility of driving mismatched when the spare is the wrong one, but maybe you can take that chance over the short haul.

If the tyres are the same nominal size, and type (as in RT/AT/MT) and ply rating, and age/wear they would behave similarly I would think. There may be other folks with direct experience, I'd like to hear as I am facing a similar question with an 80s-era 4wd I am rebuilding.

Whats the issue with the plug? I plug my own and don't worry about it. I even plugged and pumped a little old ladies in the car park for her the other day since her spare was flat and worse off then the flat.

If you can find 1 or 2 replacement tyres the same diameter, then fine. However, there are a lot of diameter variations (even among tyres nominally the same size). Diameter differences will rapidly accelerate wear of either the front or rear diff or the centre diff (depending on if you replace one tyre or both on an axle).

As said, the tyres should be of the same size and the best of the lot goes on the rear axle. Alternatively, buy a set of four and keep the remaining two in acceptable condition as spare wheels.

    Thanks for the advice all.

I will probably go with Jojo's advice and just keep the good ones as spares.
The thought of the diffs failing for the sake of a set of tyres sort of swayed me on this one.

So it looks like I am in the market for new tyres.

Anyone running Maxxi MT-753 Bravos ?

I will definitely stick with 265/75, they are a common size readily available (unlike my brand selection).

    Cheers,
    Paul.
