    v8 to 300tdi conversion

Hi everyone, im currently looking at converting my october built 1994 softdash rangie to 300tdi or to a 4bd1t. Currently my 3.9 and auto is very tired so Im looking at doing something very soon, but im still no sure what to do keep it a v8 and put a 4.6 in it or go the diesel.

If anyone has converted a softdash to diesel love to hear from you!

    cheers Geeman

I have just finished fitting a Triumph Rover Spares supplied short 4.6 to a soft dash. Goes well! Can recommend this if power is your want.

I know a couple of locals with ca. 1992 RRC's with 300TDi conversions. One bought his with the engine in, engineered in NSW, passed engineering here (SA) no hassles.

The other bloke (who is an occasional poster here) did it all himself. Not too difficult. Bought a wreck with the engine fitted, rebuilt everything, dropped it in the RRC.

The soft dash should have ABS so you don't even need vacuum for the brakes. Apart from welding the 300TDi engine mount brackets to the chassis, the rest is a doddle.

A fella i used to work with had a RRC soft dash,
he bought a smashed 300TDI discovery and transplanted the engine & manual gearbox, he said he just swapped over what he needed.

It _should_ be fairly easy to swap over as all the bits should be available off-the-shelf. A donor Disco will probably be the way to go.

I like the idea of a 4.6 or even a 5lt stroker, but then I also like the idea of turbo diesel economy! Its a bloody hard choice.

I went and had a look at a 1998 300tdi disco at fowles auctions on tuesday, but the car had 300,000klms but it also looked like it was a flood car so i gave it a miss.

Does anyone know if the 300tdi can bolt up to a v8 auto by changing the bellhousing?

No it wont just bolt up with a different bell housing.

The case is the same but a lot of the internals are different for the short answer.

I know of people who have done it and it ends in a failed box pretty quick I hear due partly to vibrations into the main pump.

i was looking at doing this with a '87 RRC hiline, i bought a complete disco for the change over but found i would not take much to put the disco back on the road and i had more stuff to play with in the disco, apart from the effort (in the front yard) to put the diesel in to the RRC, welding engine mounts (at hte tiem no welder) , manual conversion etc

That would been good, I can bring my car over for you to convert once you have finished yours off!

Well I pretty sure I want to go a diesel now!! With the price of LPG going up its not worth running it anymore.

Now ive been looking into the isuzu 4bd1t but im wondering if it will pass engineers and ADRs for Victoria,

My car is a october built 1994 rangie classic so im not to sure if the 4bd1t emmision rating comply with my car

If theres any emmision experts out there, would like to here from you.

You can come and pull Casper apart if you want to get measured up and find out what you need.

You can even use his engine and trans etc to rough in as I wont be using them for a while now the engine has pretty much died.

It wont be much good to you though as the #4 has a score on the bore and the head is stuffed and the trans has not been great for 5 years or so but all can be rebuilt so are going on the one day pile.

    Cheers Casper
