Silicone sealant cured overnight should keep you alive until you can get it rethreaded. Use a jack to tilt the vehicle, first one way to drain, then the other way to allow the goo to cure without oil on it.
Well now I know why there has been a slow (a drip every so often) leak from the drain plug. I just started my first oil change and the thread is screwed (excuse the pun).
I assume long term solution is to put a new sump cover/plate on?
What about short term? I would like to be able to put the oil back in sooner rather than later... My thoughts are:
1. Silicon sealant around the plug thread, let it cure then re-fill with oil? Any issue with silicon in the sump?
2. Plumbers tape - maybe not so good if bits of tape get in the sump?
I can tighten a little past hand tight with a wrench. But it leaks. I put the plug back in and oil very slowly dripped even from what was slowly collecting in the sump without refilling again.
I'm leaning towards (1) and see how it goes. Help?![]()

I was just finding my jack to do that in fact... Cheers.
Time to get a Fumoto oil drain valve, OilValve The ultimate oil change
I had one on the toyota which was great for the 5000klm oil changes.
I'm fitting one next time oil change is due on the Defender.
makes oil change time that much easier / cleaner
BTW, how much are those plugs? Doesn't say on the website...
$32 on Ebay
Fumoto Engine Oil Drain Valve, sump plug bolt oil pan | eBay
they come in heaps of sizes, might be better to tap your sump to a larger size & get the next size valve up.
The right one for a (original) TD5 is 16x1.5 F108
ebay sounds good. I have a 300TDI... Can't find the size in the workshop manual.... Maybe I"m blind?
OK just looked at the thread closer with a torch. It's COMPLETELY RUINED. Not going to even try silicon sealer. Looks like there's only a very small section of thread making contact with the bolt.Closer to smooth sides than any kind of thread.
Going to have to tap it I guess...not that I have any of those tools or a car to go buy them! The joys....
300TDI is 1/4 BSP , thats not in the Fumoto size list but if your thread is flogged out better to tap up to the next biggest size that corresponds with a thread size in the Fumoto list.
