			buying my first disco tdi

hi im thinking about buying my very first land rover.
its a 1997 land rover disco seires 1 tdi with a 5 speed manual.
all the body is straight and only has a tiny surface rust patch under the side roof windows its got 330-340,000 k's the fuel pump just got rebuild and proberbly only done about 40k tops since rebuilt pump and the wheels are pretty much brand new the only thing really wrong with it is that its got a engine knock which after you rev it up anything off an idle it goes away and have been told it could just be the harmonic balance woodworm key. its got no rego and no roady and they are asking $5,000 dose that seem a reasonaly price.

also what are they like power, mechanically, electronic wise? as im plaing on useing as a daily as well as a 4x4 touring car

going on what you have written and me being a cheap bugger i would steer clear of it and i would only pay around $3000 for it, if that. the engine is the keys here if it needs a rebuild it is big bikkies
someone more knowledgeable should be along shortly

Plenty more out there for 5 grand. Look elsewhere if no RWC or rego.
Think $2-3000 for it and it might be worth it if you want to do the work yourself.
 If still interested.
1st thing. Get the timing belt changed. Woodruff key at the same time as the harmonic balancer will need to be removed.
2nd. New water pump. radiator flushed(Possibly rodded) All new rubber hoses. Will alleviate major grief later on.
 3rd. Get the injectors cleaned.
4th. New clutch kit. AS you don't know the km's done with the current one.

All up approx $800+ if doing it yourself.

I know as I'm doing it to my TDI. Owned since new, slightly neglected over the last 6 years when I was in Darwin.

 Cheers
 Luke..

I just bought my first car, its a 98 Tdi Auto SE7 (i wanted a manual but got it cheap enough), had 319,000km, when i bought it at chrissy now got 322k, it has rego till may, newish cooper tyres, and is mechanically excellent, there are a few rattles as its been al over Australia, but was my aunties car so i know the whole history of it, neither of us thought it was worth more, so i got it for $3,000, best car i could want for a first car (unless a Deefer lol), but for a car like you describe i reckon $1500, (btw my car was like new till i took it bush)

Agreed that the engine is the key. If it's high kms and there is a funny noise coming from the engine, I would be very wary.

Apart from that, I own a '95 TDI Disco and it's a great first Landy. (My first Landy too). Perfect combination of on-road and off-road performance.

In my limited experience, 300TDI engines are one of the better options. Like anything though, it needs to be properly maintained or it makes no difference what engine you have!

Power wise: it's no 4.0L engine like some 4wd's, but it also uses 1/4 of the fuel to them and gets you everywhere with no problems at all. I personally love a smaller turbo diesel. Get off road into low range and there is still no shortage of power. The only time you'll notice is going up a steep hill in 5th on the highway.
