    I have cooked my tdi

I have just cooked my 300 tdi. After it cooled down it runs fine but gets hot again in about three kms. I pulled the head off and the gasket looks good but there are some small cracks in the head.

My question is can this be repaired and if not where is the best place to buy a new head?

Wow how familiar that sounds, mine is almost exactly the same but I pushed a bit further until loss of power occured.

If I were you I would get a new core, these heads are like play doe after they have gotten hot so even when you hardness test them they can still fail shortly after changing the gasket again.

You could have an internal crack which is pretty common with them as well where you can't see it without stripping the head down and vibration testing it with graphite dust.

There are some reasonably priced bare cores on Ebay at the moment from someone in Ballarat I think which would be worth a look.

Oh and change your head bolts.

    Cheers Casper

i should have said before that i bought my disco at 258k and it was a head gasket gone not over heated as i had a EM2 watchdog fitted so i fell into the the 250k trap.
the old head was 8thou warped and near where the gasket had leaked the hardness had gone down to 64 for an area of a 50c piece pretty much 110 everywhere else.
i was told very borderline and we had the money so i just got a new head, no regrets

    Dave,
You're not having the best of luck with the Disco at the moment, although the other recent issues you had were self inflicted

Murray. I have actually had a good run with the old girl. 340,000KM. I have owned it a tad over 6 years now, and as you have seen I don't treat it with kid gloves. In this time I have spent very little on it, so I certainly can not complain.

Have a look at Famous Four in the UK, head, casting only, 250pound plus freight. Most things come within a week.

They sell all the other parts seperately, bolts, rockers, valves etc.

    Just saying

The head from Paddocks is only 295 pounds complete, ready to bolt on. I reckon a 250 pound bare head will end up costing more by the time I have it fitted with valves.

    Dave.

Only had a quick look, could not find a complete price from Famous Four. Dare say they have them.
