Diesel leaking from back of 2003 TD5

Have just bought a 2003 TD5 and it is pouring diesel out of a round component at the back of the engine , sits proud about the size of a 50 cent piece and looks to be held in with a circlip onto the block. Any idea please what this unit is, how to remove(as its in a bugger of a place to get to) and repair , diesel drips constantly, driveway covered,,,Help please.

    Thanks Fritz

Your description doesn't match but there's a strong possibility that it's the fuel pressure regulator that's relieving you of your expensive diesel fuel. I assume that it is only leaking while the motor's running?

There are numerous threads detailing the repair procedure - try searching for 'fuel pressure regulator'

Yes I am mate, too nice a day in West Aus to be stuck under the bus,,, thanks heaps for the reply, that link and the write up is perfect, will break out the tool box ! Fuel only leaks when the pump is on so must be the regulator letting go,,,is the regulator fixable or do I need to buy a complete unit with the gasket and O ring ? Can a "MacGuiverism" be initiated to save a couple of $$$ ?

    Fritz

Ok, after 90 minutes of hard Yakka, some choice words and a little bark missing off the hands we have the unit removed, the mesh filter is missing so someone has had a go at this before,,, no obvious damage, will strip the pressure regulator now to see why she let go. The space is very limited and getting it back in once repaired I think will be even harder, I need articulated hands and double jointed elbows !

    Fuel pressure regulator...

quite a few threads about it.

a combo 1/4 and 3/8th drive socket set with swivel drives will be your friend along with a set of guide dowels.

It is repairable with just a few orings and gaskets.

    http://www.aulro.com/afvb/projects-t...te-images.html

    theres how to do it.

and theres a thread in the good oil that covers the oring sizes

    Repair progress,,,,,,,

Parts finally arrived from the UK(10 days because of our long weekend), Gaskets, O'rings in two shipments,,,,,,,

Fitted up the regulator and now know why when purchasing the whole unit Landrover also supply the extra top pipe which sits next to the block,,,,,,it gets hot in service and becomes very brittle, when I moved it to fit the new regulator it developed a hairline crack. When I fired up the fuel system I managed to cover the whole garage in a spray of diesel,,missus not happy with the smell ! Faced with the prospect of having to remove the inlet manifold to get to the hidden securing nut I decided to remove the flex pipe and crimp fitting in situ. The gods smiled on me, its a very soft material- was expecting a super tough stainless crimp fitting. A pair of side cutters did the job. I shall get replacement hose cut to length and some heavy duty clips in the morning and hopefully the beast will be back on the road tomorrow night !

Injector Hose from Repco -$44per metre - only needed 200mm. Replaced hose, fired up system, regulator itself still bypassing, whole unit removed again , whole new assembly fitted (using the dummy stud makes this so much easier -thanks for the tip) in under 2 hours. Fired the beast up and no more diesel leaks !!! Overflow water hose from radiator which is a hard plastic broke during reinstalation so worked out how the small landrover hose clamps work as well during replacement.

My tip for any leaks on the fuel pressure regulator ,,, don't mess around with just replacing all the "o" rings, buy the whole unit($300), make the locating stud to help with refitting the unit and you can be in and out of the job within 2 hours.

All the tips and reply's have been great, thanks also to Roger for selling me his spare unit. Cheers Fritz
