    Unhappy TD5 Fuel pump fitting

    I have a 2002 TD5 that died needing a new fuel pump at 253K,
Ordered a new one from LRdirect which arrived on Friday,

Changeover waas straightforward following instructions posted on here upto the point where you press the pump down and screw the retaining ring 3/4 of a turn................. just how far does the pump have to go down? the rubber seal from the old pump is soft and is now on the new pump. the rubber ring inside the rim of the tank feels hard and appears to be stopping the soft rubber seal on the pump from compressing down far enough. I have aligned the white plastic tab at 3pm where it fits inside 2 lugs on the plastic rim. does the pump compress down til you cannot see the rubber seal? ie white plastic to white plastic?? all 71kgs of me cannot make it compress any further, I cannot get the retaining ring to lock!!
I have marked the point where the start of the pressed thread (whats wrong with a proper machined thread?? cheap #@*%!!, and aligned it with the start of the plastic thread!!, but as I turn it, it always jumps off as if I have not compressed the pump far enough! I have spent Sat and Sunday trying, wedging it down with timber and still not succeeding!! now I need some help! with timber in place the car now starts and runs fine!! but I am not about to drive around with a piece if timber holding it down!!

    any advise greatly appreciated!!

I had a similar problem with my Defender the seal actually goes inside the hole in the tank not on it.

Put the seal in the tank then slip the pump into the seal easy when you get it right frustrating if you don't

always fit the sealing ring to the tank first, it is the only way...
