if you cut a peice out, replace it with the same thickness. No need for special steel, just mild steel. All welding must be done properly.

Alot of those UK chassis builders can supply you with any Rover engine and gearbox combo mounts, but a V8 90 was sold anyway.

I thought this but the chassis builders will stamp your current chassis number into the new one so everything will still match up and the vehicle identity will remain the same. I guess you would just need to make sure the old chassis was scrapped and no one reused it or the numbers.

Thanks for the info Jon, I will make sure it lines up and all the wires are out of the way.

Has anyone brought a galv chassis over from the UK? It would only be $1500 plus delivery, which i wouldnt have thought would be too bad if you are in no rush and happy to for it to take 3 months or so....
more or less yes, plating is cutting out the rusted bits then overlap joining past the dead area. you need to cut back to metal solid enough to weld..

I typically weld in 2mm plate for the top sections and 3-5mm plate for the sides depending on what part of the chassis it is and what size the plate needs to be.

I know of some people who have imported chassis (whats the plural for that anyway) and go-who it can be up to a 12month project depending on how you do things and how much time you can commit in a hit along with what else needs work that holds up the game.

if you're still mobile (and I've read right that you're brisbane ish) you're welcome to try to slot in for me to scope it with one of my scopes or for me to make your place a waypoint enroute to another job.

why would you weld 5mm plate in the side of the chassis when it is originally only 2mm thick?

if the damage is around the spring hanger area, the inside where the cross member behind the seat bulkhead is welded in, the front cross member or the rear cross member. Its more to to with my welding ability than the requirement to do so.

It would be much appreciated if you could take a look at it with the scope.
I will PM to set something up.

The chassis swap will happen at some point down the line when I have the space and this isnt my only car, I plan to keep this a while so no big rush.

Might it be a bit optimistic aiming to do it in a weekend like these guys [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hoeif1eQ55E]Defender Chassis Swap in 48 Hours - YouTube[/ame]
