    Problem with 300TDI

Hi, most of the time our 1995 Disco 300TDI is good, but lately been playing up. Thought it was water in fuel but seems not to be.

replaced fuel filter under bonnet, and found the one back on chassis had no water-- or no filter cartridge. Is it supposed to have a filter Cartridge, or is it just a water trap? .

Often after I stop at traffic lights, etc., and do start rolling again, it will splutter a lot when I try to get going again. Most of the time it cruises okay, but occasionally the engine seems to conk out at highway speeds. If I put my foot on clutch, and rev it, it reves okay, and then if I let out cluch it runs okay, till next time, which may be an hour later.

After looking at fuel filters I do not know what to do, Please, any advice will be appreciated.

A liitle similar to a problem that I had with my200Tdi a while ago.
The issue there was that air was being sucked into the fuel line. This was apparent when pulling away from a standing start at lights after it had been running for a while.
Apparently the fuel filter housing had become porous over time. This was replaced with a Denso clear bowl unit and all was good agian.

Sounds similar to what I had in my Patrol years ago. It had air getting into the the fuel lines through a small crack in the hose near the water trap. Took a while to track it down.

The fuel lift pumps are known to fail. A failed lift pump usually means the engine will still run (as the IP can suck up the fuel), but will be low on power. Your lack of highway power suggests this.

However it could also be a leak, which you can find my pressurising the tank slightly (15 psi or so).

You may also be able to find it by filling the tank full and parking nose down on a steep hill.

Beware that the leak could be into the sump via the lift pump diaphragm.

The "filter" on the chassis is just a sedimenter, though can be converted to a filter + sedimenter - search for a thread with how-to pics. (by langy I recall).

Exactly the same here, mate. Similar truck, identical vintage, same symptoms, happened just now. They must have had a secret agreement to playing that prank. I figured out the fault and am ordering my fuel lift pump first thing in the morning. Always something to do...

Only a few days ago another member posted that he had a problem with characteristics somewhat similar to yours JohnF - I wonder how what remedy worked for his .....

97 disco 300tdi - loses power, stalls and wont start

Since your sedimenter (the one at the rear - it is as you say a water trap) is fortunately clean (often isn't) move foward along the fuel supply system - be aware that while the fuel pump is most likely the problem as others have written - leaks can occur anywhere in the system.

Gosh, it wasn't that easy I have to admit! Swapped the faulty fuel lift pump, but ...the problem is still there. Getting from madness to despair and back to madness again, I started to go over the entire fuel system from the fuel tank to the injection pump, swapped filter and drained the sedimenter. To no avail.
Then I started to take apart everything. When I dismantled the sedimenter, I found this:

This is the lock of the sedimenter which is located on the right chassis rail, near the rear wheel. Note the hole at the 12 o'clock position and some discoloured metal, due to corrosion, around it. Surprisingly, the vehicle still could be driven, despite the large hole. As the hole is located behind the holding bracket it is absolutely invisible from the outside, even without all the dust and dirt accumulated in that place. The giveaway was quite a residue of goo in the sedimenter bowl and a rusty spot on the plastic collar within the sedimenter.

I am glad I finally found the culprit, new spares already ordered. Unfortunately I broke off one of the fuel line junctions, which will be a bother to replace. If someone has some advice to give it will be much appreciated!
    Cheers

    Mission accomplished

Today I fitted the new sedimenter, now everything is hunky dory again. The truck runs like on its first day out. The fuel line was a minor problem as there are no replacement parts available anymore so I had to fabricate something myself. All went well in the end, though. Thanks for that!
