Drill a hole through the side of the receiver, weld on a nut, and fit a bolt and lock nut to tighten up against the gooseneck.

Or drill a hole in the side/corner of the SHS receiver, weld about a 10 or 12mm nut over the hole and use a short bolt to screw up against the tongue until all movement has been eliminated.

    Towbar Rattle

    Hi,

The first thing to check is that you have sufficient weight on the drawbar.
This means that the coupling should be pushing down on the towball by around 10% of the total trailer weight, (and at around 60kg as a minimum when using a HR system).

If you can lift the trailer on and off the towball, there is not enough down-force to stop the rattle.

Not only does this weight stop the rattle, it helps to stop the trailer from swinging from side to side when underway.

If necessary, adjust the spring/axle mounting position to the rear so that there is more weight on the nose. You can use a set of bathroom scales to check.

Another way is to position the spare on the drawbar, or install a toolbox to carry the trailer jack, wheelbrace, ropes and jockeywheel while travelling.

Be aware that uphill travel will naturally take some weight off the ball and make it more likely that there will be a rattle.

    Goodluck,

You can also use a more durable plastic sheeting as a wrap, things like kitchen chopping mats (cut down to size) will last about a year or so. The important areas are the top and bottom as it is often the rocking of the tongue about the retaining pin rather than fore and aft movement.

The bolt is a good idea, but a bit of a hassel on step bars if you remove or swap the tongues for different hitches. (I always hate lying under the car when it's raining and I have to insert the pintle instead of the ball!)

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

drill the corner near the end @ 45 degrees with a 7mm drill then tap it with 8.5mm then install an 8x.5 mm high tensile bolt with enough shank length to hold a nut.

wind the bolt in then when its tight wind the nut down and cinch it in.

I found a product called an "Anti Rattle Device" at my local caravan shop,, it fits inside the tongue and pulls a wedge against the pin.

    works great!
