    2004 Disco 2 TD5 auto - sluggish on hills

I have recently driven a TD5 Disco 2 automatic and whilst it is not too bad in town it really struggled when I overtook another vehicle and had to give it some stick. On a level road it would not go past 140km/h - which decidedly is too fast for a 4x4 yes, but I was overtaking. I floored it, and it bumped up a gear and the engine felt like it was started hesitating - the RPMs were about 4000. Almost felt like a rev limiter. I also found it would really struggle on hills - no acceleration beyond say 90km/h.

MAF is ok - 54kg/hr at idle, and going above 600kg/hr under load on the open road.

Any ideas? Automatic transmission, diesel pump?

    Hi Phuma

That sounds about right, My 99 D2 TD5 doesn't would not rev much past 4k and struggles on the hills with the foot flat the it slows to about 90. This I believe is where Tombie pipes in with " you need me to Chip it for you" He can Chip the ECU to fix the lacking grunt, 140km would be my trucks limit.

unless mine has the some issue.

This is the reason for the sticker "You can go fast, I can go anywhere"

    Cheers

No, I can't believe this is ok. How do you overtake a vehicle in a TD5 then? The redline is a bit higher too - I believe around 4800 rpm? It should go past 4000 at least - otherwise something is not ok.

4000 rpm sounds about right for a diesel TD5. However something may be amiss as my Defender that is lower geared will hit 150kmph no problem. When I test drove a TD5 Disco had no problem taking to 150. I do believe these may be speed limited also, so that could be the answer.
I would be checking a few things, but often peoples expectations are too high. The TD5 is a fairly hard pulling engine and will do so its entire life.
A lot of the newer diesels will only do it for the first 50-60000kms and then start to lag.

My manuals were slightly better but still required a run-up to overtake in std form, slightly better with a large I/C but heaps better with a Tombie ecu upgrade. This allowed overtaking in the next higher gear rather than screaming whilst getting nowhere in a lower gear.

Sounds to me like you are expecting too much out of an engine developed in the mid 90's, the manuals go heaps better than the slushbox, but even so the auto is spirited enough, the specs you have given sound about right, and when towing the old cars my grandfather used to sit on about 90kph in his TD5 auto, hills were quite slow. If you want the preformance you seem to think it should have i'd go with a V8 and suffer at the pump, otherwise sit back with the rest of us, and cruise (even at 120kph)

Oh and as others have said, when TD5's are chipped they go like the clappers, much better than a V8 IMO. I'd go this route unless you don't like modifying.

Doesn't sound that unfamiliar to me. Td5 will not rev above 4500. The D2 is not a small vehicle so drag does play a big part as the speed gets higher.

Just look at the basics first. My stock td5 manual without any accessories could achieve 165 no problem and had a smidge left in it. Add a bullbar, rear bar and carriers, snorkel, steps and sliders and lift and it couldn't get above 130 without a whole heap of space. The chip now allows it to do more than pre mod performance.

My point isnt to look at a chip but consider that accessories suck the performance from any rig from weight and wind drag.

I wouldn't be chasing poor performance on a test drive vehicle until you have your own comparison.

    Cheers

Just curious as to what the problem could be - and whether could be an easy fix.
