Check the compression ratio, if it's low like the RRC then it will be as slow as the RRC one.

						SupporterHello everyone .
Today I was presented with an offer to buy a 3.5 complete sd1 rover motor including all bolt on accessories aswell as the computer , loom and airflow meter .Wondering about these motors as replacements for my range rovers and need to know if they are direct replacements and performance characteristics compared to 3.5 injected rangie motors .
Any info on these motors would be appreciated .
Cheers

Only similar in long motor guise. The whole accessories, timing cover, manifolds, EFI etc etc is totally different to RRC. All you can use is the block and heads.
IIRC all EFI SD1 in oz were low compression, same as RR.

Supporterbeen reading a few internet forums for info and found one mention of crank snout and bottom pulleys may not interchange . Anyone know for sure ?
Im thinking of buying this for the bottom end and bolting all my 3.9 heads and injection aswell as hotwire efi and serpentine belt set up onto it and fitting it into my 94 soft dash to replace my cracked block 3.9 .
Supposedly recoed and buy price is $600 complete and I could possibly recover some of this cost with the sale of the sd1 injection and accessories .
Check the compression ratio on the left hand cylinder head.I had a high comp 3.5 in my SD1 years ago which was a personal import. It had a Rover 5 spd and ran a 2 barrel Holley on LPG.For what it was it went pretty good.Much better then the low comp motors and pulled away effortlessly from idle.I remember beating my brothers Commodore VH SLE 4.2 V8 with exhaust and 4 barrel many years ago
They like to rev harder and i think made 155 HP with twin stromberg carbs.I thought about putting one in my Early Disco 93 model which had a 3.5 but could never find a high comp block. With injection and later model cylinder heads i reckon it would be pretty good.It would be an interesting project to say the least.Good luck with it!

SubscriberIn Australia the injection was "Federal" injection which was AFAIK unique to Australia and had a square shaped plenum with all the ports in a row underneath. Otherwise it was similar but not as advanced if that is the word as the "flapper" injection. it also had a flapper , and cold start solonoid, but no override injector shut off.
I bought and fitted one to a 77RRC.
I was pretty disappointed, as it didn't really give me any noticable performance benefit or economy benefit over well tuned and fettled Strombergs, although I did get 13.5 L per 100Kms on a long flat run to Carnarvon Gorge once.
