Thread: V8 alternator connection, re-crimp or not?

Need photos!!! (Makes it easier, anyway.)

the first 2 are the existing alternator and plug.
What I have to replace it is the alternator with the two large and one small spade connector. The mounting bolt holes are fine.

So, can I just cut the plug and crimp on spade connectors?
If so which will go where?

BTW the replacment alternator is from 2 door RRC too, must be a different year.

Hangover,its a type 1 and a type 2 Alternator connector if you have a look at google books for "classic British car electrical systems" you'll find the pin outs and how to do it.

The third photo shows what I've got. The little tab is for the warning light, and the bigger ones are for the output. An auto sparky told me that there are two so that you can run two big wires which woud run cooler than one big wire.

you should also find that the 2 bigger spades are on different phases of the out put so that you can use it as a very effective dual battery system..

one spade to each battery with the excite coming off of the primary starter.

the small spade should be the excite to work out which of your 3 in the plug does that probe for 12V with the ignition on, the big one will show 12v regardless of the ignition setting and the smaller one that provides the excitation or sense should only show 12V when the ignition is on.

You dont need to recrimp with a jewlers screwdriver you should be able to free the prong of the existing spade connectors from the plug pull the spades out the back then just push them onto the spades in the housing.
