    non turbo 300 TDI?

Is it possible to de turbo a 300TDI, ie fit extrators/modify air intake and tweak the injector pump as required.
Reason is to make a bomb proof motor, power/torque not an issue.
Has anyone done it or heard of it being done?
    Thanks in advance
    Dave

Why.....plenty more things to go wrong before the turbo, 340k on mine and I reckon the turbo will outlast my ownership

I would be more worried about the timing belt

Maybe a 200tdi as its chain driven

Frankly, the 300TDi is pretty bomb proof, even with a turbo!

no but they did change the better made timing gears(200tdi) to ones made from pressed tin(300tdi).

If you already have a 300tdi, all I would do is add a 2.65 mandrel bent exhaust with one free flowing muffler. If it is in a defender, replace the temp gauge with a aftermarket one (say VDO). Fit a EGT gauge.

I dont think the OP is worried about the turbo failing, but more so the power it makes creating some of the common problems. If you are going to stick with a LR engine, just go through all the things that need to be checked. Ie right through the cooling system including theromstat and viscus fan. Remove and flush out the intercooler. Fit a Provent. Change oil and filter every 5000k. Make sure tappets are adjusted.

Im sure there is more to check, it is all in AULRO somewhere, some guys know off the top of their head.

Sounds like you want an Isuzu 4BD1.

Assuming removing the turbo would be beneficial to longevity....

Aside from what you have mentioned you would need to replace the pistons to restore some sort of compression, this isn't just to bring back some sort of reasonable torque figure.... you would find the fuel consumption to be astonishingly bad if you left the compression ratio as is.

i think sourcing some appropriate pistons would be the hardest job... although I have never tried to source custom pistons before so I may well be wrong.
