A new 3.5, actually. It was found in the back of a warehouse! The cam had surface rust, so while I'm doing that . . . etc., etc. I will confess that since it's complete and new I'm leaving the pistons and bearings alone, so it's not that much work.

MacMan, $4000 is pretty cheap for top hats and all. Have a look at Turner Engineering's stuff and how much it would cost to get it over here.

I guess so. I shudder to think what it would have cost to have it all done by someone else!

To do a Rover V8 there is more to do that just putting in Top Hat liners - while these may stop the liners moving they do not stop coolant leaking out at the bottom of the liner is there are cracks - this needs to be checked. So some blocks may not be suitable for rebuilding even with top hat liners.

I have found most local engine builders do not have the means of checking blocks for suitability for rebuilding.

Some listings of rebuilders on the east coast who can do this would be helpful as I need to go through this checking process soon.

    Cheers

All sorts of traps for young players too. The cam bearings in my block were stuffed and needed to come out anyhow to clear the oil galleries of swarf. All good and well except the bod who put the new ones in has inserted the second from front so that there's minimal alignment of the oil feed hole with the gallery in the block. Not to mention they've scratched them all doing the trial fit of the cam.

    Extremely unimpressed. Phone call tomorrow.

The 4.4 is from 1974. Forget it, it's ancient. If you have a trusted 3.9 motor do a simple refresh with rings, big ends, timing chain etc and save your pennies for a proper top hat liner reco. Or buy Chad's 4.2 stroker motor, and bung it in.

The Holden engine will be heavier, which may be an issue in sand. -Matter of balance F to Rear.

If you are questioning the cost of top hat linering, you don't want to go for a 5.0 Holden (all cast iron) or the 5.7 all alloy V8 as the cost of adaptors, wiring and engineering will far outweight the cost of doing the Rover engine properly.

Just get a 3.9 checked and top hatted. These guys will even sell you the liners for a shop over here to put in; V8 ductile iron flanged linered block casting from Turner Engineering

Or: Rover V8 Cylinder block castings, new and flanged linered block from Turner Engineering

The exchange rate is a wonderful 1.5 these days, so that's about $1900.

Don't get put off if you want to do it, and don't even think about a conversion, which will be far, far more trouble. MacMan's experience is typical of what knuckle-dragging machinist idiots do, so just finding someone capable is usually the biggest headache. (I know this as I seem to attract useless companies.)
