Semi Floating to full floating rear axle conversion

    Hi,

Does anyone know what is involved in converting the rear axle of a series one to full floating?

You need to acquire the hubs and stub axles and correct 10" or 11" backing plate from a SII/SIIa rear axle assembly, also a set of 24 spline drive flanges from a SIII rear salisbury assembly or SIIb forward control. The S1 width axles can be sourced as specials from Barry Ward, Hi-Tough Engineering in Queensland. (in the white pages)

You then unbolt your semi floating rear axle/hub assembly. Fit the stub axle and brake backing plate with original shoes and wheel cylinder to the axle housing. Then assemble the rest same way you would assemble a fully floating axle.

If you don't want to use Hi-Tough specials, you can use original SII/SIIa axles and flanges with longer bolts and a 3/4" spacer between the hub and flange.

If you want to keep the original look of the star pattern drive flanges of the S1, you may be able to talk barry ward into boring out the 10 spline and broaching the 24 splines into to originals. McNamaras in Melbourne used to do it, but have never heard of barry doing it, although he does have the broach to cut the splines, so worth a try asking the question.

You have a system where the weight of the vehicle and load is carried by two bearings on the stub axle and not a single bearing on the halfshaft. It means that you can acquire brand new halfshafts with un-damaged splines and without metal fatigue. Have you ever tried to obtain new or very good condition semi-floating axles?

It is also means that a bearing or seal failure can be attended with normal hand tools on the side of the road without the need to carry a 40 ton press.

Fully floating axles were fitted to S1 in 1957-1958.
