Engine machine shop in Melbourne
Hi guys
The Td5 has done a head gasket {240k}and i am wanting to know who to send the head to. I want to make sure it's not cracked or warped.
I have read on another forum that these heads are surface hardened and should not be machined flat. I have also read that a 10 thou skim will not be a problem.
So:
Q1) Who to send the head to in Melbourne?
Q2) Who has machined their Td5 head and how much was removed and did this cause any problems later on?
and
Q3) Is it worth getting the injectors checked while they are out?
Many thanks in advance.

Not sure about TD5 heads. Possibly the same problems as the TDI's. You might as well get a Turner Head from the UK. Do they do TD5 Heads?
Years ago when I was living in the West, REPCO in Footscray (Ballarat Rd, Near Bink's) had a machine shop that would do everything.ie; Rebore, Head rebuild, Propshaft extensions/balances. Not sure if theya re still there or are doing it still. Pricing was pretty good and turnaround time was very quick.
Cheers

I've had 2 heads skimmed about 6-7thou with no problems.
Re the injectors, I wouldn't worry at 240k, unless you have reason to believe there is an issue. they are easy enough to remove later on if required.
Cant help with the engine shop stuff.

Not sure how they are for LR stuff but my old man swears by a mob called Crankshaft Rebuilders in Blackburn ( used to be in Kew when I was a youngster) The work he has done is usually on 1920's and 1930's engines but they do work on V8 touring car engines as well. They have been around for years - 25 at least - and seem to have a good reputation.

You might want to get it checked for cracks as well. They have a tendency to develop hairline cracks that leak fuel into the cylinders resulting in the sump filling up with diesel followed by a spectacular show with the engine running on uncontrollably! That's what happened to mine after I had the head gasket done.

Some alternatives with track records;
1. Gown & Hindhaugh in Box Hill South, off Middleborough Rd;
2. Orger Engines in Bayswater, in Scoresby Rd, and
3. Pearl Engine Reconditioning in Montrose, in Canterbury Rd.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the response guys.
@hamish71 at this stage i only want to check the deck and make sure it's not cracked. I can get a new AMC head here for around $2300. I am checking with relo's overseas to see what they can do.
@luke68 I think they are called Footscray Engine Reconditioners. If that is the case I WILL NOT USE THEM. Past experience.
@Psimpson7 Thanks for that.Hopefully i wont need to skim it but good to know i can take some off if need be.
@ offtrack. Thanks i will call them in the morning.
@frenchie. I believe the AMC head is much stronger in this area. If it's not cracked or warped to badly it's going back on. It's not a daily driver so i can take my time. It's a toy and i cant afford a new head. If this one turns out to be RS it can sit in the garage while i find the best deal on a new one.
@pierre I spoke to Orger Race Engines today. $200 to dip the head, check the deck and crack test. A few people at work have used them over the years and highly recommend them. I will give Pearl and Gown a call in the morning to see what they can do.
Thanks again for the response and hope to see you out on the tracks soon.
cheers

It's probably too late. If you live in the west of Melbourne, Hoppers Express (or Hoppers Heads) seem good. I have taken Rover stuff there for machining and turn around time is very quick, and have bought a reco stuff from them before when I had a Mazda work van. Home -
