Bump.
Hi, as the title says, my 99 300 TDI S1 Disco auto jumps out of low range at the worst possible times. Half way up a very steep hill 1st gear low range, hitting a step and it jumps out of low into neutral. It did it a couple of times. First time I thought it must not have been in low range properly but im sure it was the second time. 3rd time my wife (very bravely) had her foot against the lever to try to stop it jumping out and it still did. The lever moves quite freely but it seems that the transfer case lever it tight that it connects to. Not sure what happens under there as I havnt had a look yet. Any common problems that I should look for?
Thanx
Dave
Bump.
most likely its going to need a tcase drop out and repair....
I suspect that its probably the selector teeth have gotten tapered or the bearings are a bit slopply allowing the mechanism to jump out.
you could check that the linkages are throwing the correct distance by dropping the bottom inspection plate off and observing the movement of the selector. If it makes full travel and engagement then its wear on component that must be removed to be replaced.

If you've benefited from one or more of my posts please remember, your taxes paid for my skill sets, I'm just trying to make sure you get your monies worth.
If you think you're in front on the deal, pay it forwards.
Also try putting it into low/high range while still rolling slowly. I have had the transfer pop out of gear before, but it hasn't ever done when selecting H or L while still rolling slowly.

Try what Slunnie said.
Also you could try putting into low/high then driving forward and then pushing it in again.
Mine does it sometimes and has done for the 5+ years I've owned it. I've heard it is quite common.
So long as I do the above then it doesn't risk jumping out unexpectedly.
Mine is a V8 manual but shouldn't make much difference.
Thanx guys, Im pretty sure it was fully engaged but ill give it a try. Thanx
for the tips. Ill have a look in the inspection plate the first chance I get.
Thanx
Dave
As above, really ram the selector home.
