Hi all.
I am experiencing some strange issues at the moment (TD5 related!).
When cold, the defender feels like it has no turbo.![]()
Although, once heated up to normal operating temp, the power is back to normal.
Also, last trip away I felt the vehicle kind of losing power when under load. It would accelerate normally (on my way up the range) then the power would drop off to a point where I would have to change down a gear...
The vehicle has had an ECU upgrade, but no other mods.
Any suggestions???
Cheers.

Hi djam1,
disconnected the MAF and power returns to normal.
Is there any issue associated with running the engine without this connected until the new part arrives?
Thanks.
I dont think it will hurt anything but fuel economy wont be at its best as it will be running at default values.
Someone wiser than I may be along shortly
Try cleaning it with CO cleaner spray.Jaycar etc sell it.

Yep works a treat, bunnings has it too. Just make sure it's cold first or you will need a new one regardless.Originally Posted by LandyAndy

When cold they will idle at around 850 rpm with rpm slowly decreasing until 20 deg is reached and then 750 rpm. Up to 40 deg the ecm won't allow full fuel unless you give it a boot full and override the ecm. This does feel like no boost. When my MAF failed it didn't cause a low power problem, it over fueled at lower rpm (default setting) - heaps of diesel smoke. Disconnecting the MAF is probably only removing an input that tells the engine in combination with other inputs that it is not at operating temp and allows it to have full fuel. The MAF works on the temp of the filament changing current flow.
If the problem when cold is happening above about 40 deg engine temp you do have a problem, below 40 deg engine temp all is normal. The problem you have when hot I will leave to the experts.
Thanks for the replies to all.
I have already cleaned the MAF with an electrical parts cleaner with no real change.
I'll wait until the part gets here and see how it fares up.
Cheers.
Just thought I'd bring an end to the thread.
New MAF installed and all is working just fine!
Going from a series 2A to a TD5 Defender is not without it's quirks!
Thanks all.
