    300Tdi Valve Stem Seals

    My 300Tdi Defender is smoking "moderately" on startup after it's been sitting for a while (overnight/couple of days, etc). It's oil smoke; grey/blue-ish. It clears fairly quickly, within a minute or two, even quicker if you start driving.

    The turbo is only about 2000km old and there is no oil whatsoever collecting in the bottom of the intercooler or in the hoses. I ran it with the crank case vent running into a bottle for a week or so (no officer, it came like that ) just to make sure that was ok and there was virtually no oil dropped into the bottle and no difference to the smoke levels.

    So, am I safe to assume it's valve stem seals? Also, who has an opinion on whether you can, or should replace them with the head left on? The engine was only rebuilt 95000km ago, with a new bare head. Maybe they are Britpart stem seals.......

    If you are 100% sure it isn't dribbly injectors, then sounds like it must be the stem seals.

    You can, however you need a fitting to pressurise each cylinder while you remove the valve springs. Drop a valve then it is head off time...

    Most people remove the head to do it.

    It does look and smell like oil smoke, so I'm fairly sure.

    My thought was to turn the engine to TDC for each piston as you work along, to guarantee no dropped valves.

    Thats how I've done it. Just don't get the cylinders wrong. And I would use genuine seals too.

    I've also done VSS with head on and at TDC. Remove glow plugs to help turning over. Really quick and easy.
