Locking wheel nuts - ridiculously soft metal!

    Hiya all,

A few weeks ago I went to remove the defender's wheels for the first time since buying it to change the brake pads.

They have the locking nuts which correspond with this key.

I have the key, but the car sat for a long time before I bought it and the nuts are on ridiculously tight. I had no luck getting the lock nuts off on any of the wheels; the other nuts came off fine. I found that, when using the key, the nut itself would distort out of shape rather than loosen. I have since tried hammering a socket over the nut, cutting a slit in it and turning it with a length of metal, hammering it with a chisel at an angle, vice-grips, bashing the original locking nut key over it at a different angle all to no avail, and all after numerous liberal soakings with WD40.

Has anyone else ever had such an absolutely stubborn lock nut problem? I am going to take it to the shop to get it done, but is the metal used for the lock nut just THAT soft that it just bends before it loosens? Seems ludicrous to me, considering how thick the chassis rails on a defender are...

same on disco, removed with rattle gun and key and fitted normal wheel nut to match others. Don't think anybody is going to jack up your defender and steal all 4 wheels unless you live in a neighborhood that if might happen.

Yep, had exactly the same problem with my 2008 110, ended up getting the nut to release with the oxy and a cold chisel, went to land rover and they said it was a common problem, the lock nut adaptor is of poor quality material. I threw mine and replaced them with standard nuts...about $60 dollars. I had not long returned from googs track, imagine being stranded for something as stupid as a faulty lock nut?!

    Yep common problem.
    Replace with standard asap.

Look at the surface areas that take all the torque. Compare that to a standard wheel nut. The locker has no chance of withstanding all that force, whatever it's made of.

While we're here I'm curious how many designs there are. 26? A-Z?

If you split the lock nut remover, tap it back into shape and put a hose clip around to hold it in place as a temporary measure, before ditching them.

I use a bit of graphite on the studs occasionally.

you could try putting the lock nut in place then welding around the outside and quench it while still hot.
hopefully it would shrink the nuy and harden it a little

OK so reluctantly took the defender to the shop to get the nuts removed. They are off and replaced with standards nuts. Now I can sleep at night again.

Will be changing brake pads over the weekend, will definitely be drowning the nuts in some sort of lubricant!
