Thread: Winch fitment (urgent) & dual battery info

I guess you don't have batteries fighting each other so it's dual battery system.

The Warn winches have a controller box which contain the relays and depending upon which model 9,000 lbs one you get will determine where if mounts:

Internal control/relay box XD9000i (contained in the housing across the top of the drum)



External control/relay box XD9000 (the black box on your left which can be relocated to an appropriate location.)

Mate not wanting to be rude if you are asking questions as basic as this I am not sure it is wise to mount it yourself.
Winches and Winching involve a lot of stresses and if you do it wrong you could kill or injure someone.

I can mount it strong enough to pull a house down (theoretically speaking) but if it's not needed I won't bother, I'm new to the 4x4 world, i can pull a 1992 onwards magna apart and rebuild engine, ie I modded and fitted a 2008 380 Vrx motor into my 2000 tj in a weekend. All this is not relevant to this thread but just trying to show you an example of why I need advise on fitment, not instructions. And I know how to wire up the 2nd battery, I'm chasing advice on where the experienced people have there's. There are obviously better places then others and I'd like the knowledge from those who have done the trial and error. I appreciate your concern and understand your concern but safety is not an issue. Knowledge is my issue ATM. Please don't think im biting either. Cheers

Individual choice...many people don't install 2nd batteries but run winches off their main battery as the engine should generally be running when winching. My 2nd battery is placed on the opposite side to the main battery (where the jack and chock are). There is a mounting plate there.

My winch is run off the starter battery, only used in emergencies as i don't do anything that dumb, just had the winch so bolted it on, i run it through an isolater switch too. IMO you shouldn't run a winch off the starter battery i wound mine all the way out to rewind it neatly and with the engine running it still stuffed the battery (probs 5 year old battery but still), i then winched the drowned car onto the trailer and that saw the end of that battery haha, i'm going to build a snorkel at some stage and that will free up the second abttery comparetment i'll fit a dual battery then, i don't recommend an electric battery controller, use switched solenoids so you make sure your starter battery gets enough juice.

The passenger side has a matching battery tray. Wiring, simple method use a high current isolation switch. If it's a 3 way connect main to no 1, secondary to no 2, wire to starter to common. Earth second battery to chassis/engine.

As for the winch mount, the following thread;

has a pic of how I mounted a low mount behind, originally the std D2 bumper and later a tube bar mounted to the original crush cans. The flat (where the red recover eye points are threaded through the plate and nutted behind) section the winch wits in is approx 230 x 75 paralel flange channel steel. Winch bolted down, hole cut in front for line out and its thick enough to thread for the bolts for the hawse. At each side theres a 6mm plate bent to 90deg that sits up the sides and bolts through the original holes in the chassis and sits under the channel which is bolted to the plates. The original steering guard is underneath hard against the underside which prevents possible rotation.
