    Unhappy Clutch Shudder 2001 D2

    Hi there,
    On my 2nd clutch at 236000Ks.
    It didn't feel perfect when it was put in but too late now.
    Any ideas on whether it may be the clutch plate or the dual mass flywheel on the way.
    Worse in reverse and all but disappears when hot.
    This time I shall change it myself --any ideas on just how hard it is and what are the unseen problems.
    Have a hoist in my shed and a copy of the CD.
    Looking for inspiration / help.

    depends on when its shuddering...

    If its shuddering on take up then most likely its a contaminated plate.

    if its shuddering when your driving then its the wheel. or something out of balance.

    IF its only doing it on take up and you are really really lucky it may be the slave cylinder not retracting correctly due to damage or contamination in the bore.

    Thanks. Shudders on take up only. At work in PNG at the moment but will run some fluid thru the system a nd flush it a bit.
    otherwise I guess it's gearbox out and plate change.

    Sorry for the Hi-jack Trackless, just a quick question for Dave regarding his post.

    Dave, I've lost all the hydrolic fluid into the bellhousing when the new slave cylinder decided to give up the gost 3 weeks after I replaced all the clutch components. After I replaced the slave cylinder and battled through the bleeding process I now have a slight shudder on take-up which I think is due to a contaminated plate. I don't know how bad the contamination is but will it go away?

    Trackless, as mentioned I just completed the clutch on my 02 Defender. I've done myne in the driveway and a Gearbox-jack was what saved me, it made the job very manageble. One thing that cought me was not paying attention when splitting the TC and Gearbox, check what length of bolt come out of which hole. By having the wrong length in the wrong position locked the TC and cost me 3 months of my life in worries. I also changed all the seals on both boxes while they were out including the O-rings on the itermediate shaft in the TC.

    No problems with the hijack. Just a elcheapo transmission jack or an upmarket one?
    And I cant work out what the TC is. Must be simple but I am getting old and have to sing happy birthday to work out my name!

    The one I got from fellow WA-AULROian looks better than an elcheapo, there is also a TC bracket to make thinks easier. I'll try and post a pic of what it looks like.

    TC - Transfercase. Don't worry, some of the terminology used on here takes me some time to get my head around too.
