Do you have microcat? if so have a look at the gear boxes the diagrams show fixing bolts, depending on which gear box you have. It may be of help.
Trying to remove the gearbox to change the clutch on my Freelander but it wont move. I think I have found all the bolts, removed the starter and there are no more bolts there.
There were 2 that were hard to get to (1st pic) but these are removed. Pic from a tutorial I found online.
...but this screenshot is from a Youtube video that looks different. Theres a bolt hole that I think I might have. Cant see the bolt head but I can feel it when sticking my hand there from the engine side. Cant even get a wrench to it so impossible to remove at this stage.
Could this bolt be holding the gearbox? Or any other ideas where to look? Thanks.

Summary of removal process.
1. Remove starter motor
2.Remove 4 bolts that join the IRD to the gearbox
3. undo retaining bolts an remove flywheel cover plates
4. ensure gearbox is supported and remove remaining bolts joining the transmission assembly to the engine (no number of bolts given)
5.remove gearbox from engine
So there are 4 bolts joining the gearbox to the IRD - I have not removed a gearbox but have done the IRD and all 4 bolts are accessible from the IRD end.

Thanks for your replies! Starter is now removed, it was loose before but I saw that its getting in the way so its removed.
I think all the bolts you mention are removed. However theres something I have not been able to do as the pictures above. That is to remove the 'cup' shape part of the driveshaft end. I only got the rubber seal from it but the 'cup' (sry, dont know the exact name) is still in there and wont come out. Is this something that has to come out?

How did you manage to separate the CV when all is in place. The cup and the rest of the CV is supposed to stay together. The cup will come off with a good sharp pull (it is held in by an internal circlip that you have to pull against). If it will not budge (but they do usually pop out) then gentle prising with something like a screw driver will move it out.

Just removed the fastening thats holding the rubber seal in place. I see now that this was wrong. I will try again tomorrow in daylight to pull the cup out.
Is this something that would hold the gearbox in place? I assume it is.
If I remember correctly the inner CVs do not have a retaining circlip in them so they do out out easily.
The remaining bit of the CV may be holding it. Power from the the gearbox goes into the IRD via a splined tube and power comes back from the IRD to the passenger driveshaft via a splined shaft that runs inside splined tube. I would prise/pull off the cup piece of the CV and then do the same with the gearbox.

Starting to feel desperate here. Tried pulling, nothing. Tried also with a smaller crowbar, still wont move.
Then noticed there is another clip thats in between the joint and the gearbox. Tried moving this with a screwdriver and it comes out about 5mm. Still it does not help getting all of it out by pulling.
So should I get the cup loose from position 1 or 2? 1 is the cup itself, 2 is including the middle part between the cup and gearbox.
Also tried to tie a thinner rope on the cup to get stronger pulling power behind it. Nothing again.
Prising it will move it - maybe a bit of biffo is needed or some Weeties for breakfast.
Here is a page from the workshop manual - you do not need the special tools just an appropriate lever. Paras 9/10 are relevant.

To get the outer race of CV joint out, they need to come out square, use 2 pry bars or big screwdrivers opposite each other and give the a short hard pry, this will release the cir-clip on the end of the shaft.
You need to separate the IRD from the gearbox as you have to remove the IRD to gearbox adapter plate and bell housing bolt above the adapter plate to remove the gear box. You can leave the adapter plate on if you remove the sub frame.
