300tdi valves set hot or cold?

Just replaced the entire rocker set on my 300tdi and set all the valves to be a nice 8thou, went through and double checked them and all OK. Put it all back together and took it for a run and was curious to what the hot settings would be, they all opened up to 12thou and if I set them hot they all nipped up way too tight when it cooled down. So which would be the best state to set the valves hot or cold? Don't know why LR would give the same setting for hot or cold when clearly there is a big difference to the valve clearance hot to cold and I'm told the clearances are critical for the best performance of the 300tdi.

Ok warm it is then I didn't realise there would be that big a difference between Hot and Cold clearances especially when LR basically say it doesn't matter by giving you the one setting, which is why I always thought it wasnt critical for the 300tdi. On previous vehicles I would always set HOT b

Set them hot as most of the running for the engine will be in the normal operational zone
