Like when I, after turning the engine over by hand 20 plus times, checked all tools had been removed from the engine bay then left the torque wrench on the crankshaft pulley and started the motor for the first time... The bolt came halfway off the thread. I wish I'd been turning it over anticlockwise.

Well could be no worse than the bloke that brought me a Freelander engine under his arm and aked me to do his valve timing & belts.
After removiing all the the special timing tools I was about to pull the grenade pin from the tensioner--when the bloke said "Don'ty bother I will do that later"!
Suffice to state he forgot and the belt teeth sheered off in service and caused a whole lot of valve and cylinder damage.
Crickey mate what a mess!
