    Immobiliser (spider)

    Hi Guys,

New to here, so please be gentle

    I have recently bought a 95 disco 3.9 auto running petrol/gas.

Recently the car just cut out on me whilst running on gas. I restarted the car on petrol and appeared to run ok. It happened again yesterday, but this time it wouldnt run on petrol either. I then had trouble restarting the car..... would crank over but wouldnt fire. Once I did get it running, it would only run for a very short period of time and cut out again......like it wasnt getting fuel. This would happen on both petrol and gas.

Oddly enough, while looking through the car today, I found a spare part in the rear of the car, unopened with a part number of AMR 4956, I found out it is the bypass wiring for the "spider unit" which is part of the immobiliser system. I am still not 100% sure this is causing the cutting out problem, but it seems to be pointing in that direction.

Is it possible to bypass this system for testing/diagnosis before I pull the dash apart to get to the "spider"??

    All help appreciated

    Kel

    No getting around it.
You need to pull the dash apart(Middle section. Radio & Heater controls). It sits behind and below the radio and is a PITA to get out. Once out move the wiring to under the steering wheel part of the dash for easier access later if required. Then put the bypass plug that you found in the back and drive with this fitted for a few days.
You could try and re-solder the bad joints on the immobiliser and still have it working instead of the bypass.
I did this to mine about 10 months ago and no problems since. Before that it would happen every 2-3 weeks when I was living in Darwin.
It's your choice which way you want to go.
Plan on about 1-2 hrs to get the bloody out.

    Cheers
    Luke

I had exact same problem with mine recently. I changed the tps and stepper motor and haven't had a problem in 2500kms. The cut outs on mine progressively got worse, and it also had an idle speed problem, Idle speed would sit on around 1200rpm at times other times it would idle sweet.

I had the bypass link cable on its way in the mail when i thought i would have a bit of a stab in the dark at the idle speed problem, got the tps and steeper motor from a wreckers for cheap, put them both in and both problems solved

on My 300tdi disco I had a problem with getting it going again after having the engine out for a fair while. I was getting 12v at the fuel shut off but not enough current to get it to work. my solution was just to join a new wire into the ignition switch and bypass it. did the trick. my next problem is that when driving down a corrugated road the hazards turn on and wont turn off till the engine is shut down and restarted. On a previous post asking about this was told that alarm spider would need bypassing or repaired. might as well put a new heater matrix in while I have the dash off.
