Question Distributor cam for Lucas 45d4 on a Series 3 4cyl

    Hi All,

Anyone know the correct distributor cam advance for a SIII 2.286 petrol Lucas 45d4?
The amount of mechanical advance is stamped on the base plate of the cam that the weights clip onto, as pictured here (you can see examples on page 4 of different cams):

    Thanks for any advice!

And any ideas if this advance curve should be modded for unleaded?

    Cheers,

    Dave

I'm not sure what you mean by "cam advance". Do you mean ignition timing?

Unless you're changing camshafts and flowing the head and doing up the exhaust and changing the carburretor I wouldn't bother with just changing the curve. The 2&1/4 has a lot of its own weight to overcome and needs a lot of work to show a real improvement.

    Hi Davo,

I'm talking about the maximaum mechanical advance, stamped on the 'base plate' of the cam in the distributor (found under the breaker plate).

I'm buying a 45d4 dizzy but it may well not have the right cam or springs for a landrover motor (think it's from a Hillman Hunter). I also have my old D45 dizzy with presumably the right cam and springs but shagged bushes. I am going to change out the cam and springs to the new dizzy if it's different, but before I do that I wanted to make sure it's the right one anyway, as my landy originally had a 24v dizzy (Lightweight FFR) which had already been replaced with a Lucas unit when I bought it years ago.
So in a nutshell, what should the number stamped on the baseplate of the cam (degrees of advance) be in a SIII LR?

    Cheers,

    Dave

Sorry, I get you now. I have a very vague memory of this being covered somewhere ages ago, but it doesn't come up too often. Maybe these guys: Reconditioned Lucas distributors, rebuilt Lucas distributors, recurved Lucas distributors from Distributor Doctor could help.

    Thanks Davo!
I found some useful info here if you have a Lucas dizzy and wonder if it suits:

    Lucas Ignition List | Scribd

Think Lucas D45D4 for Series 3 Landy is 41630. It's stamped on side of the dizzy. Love to know if you find your dizzy is actually off an MG or the Tardis. Must be a lot of 45d4's out there on the wrong application!

Trying to send this via iPhone, keyboard is for Asian girl size fingers I think! At least landrover series 3 parts are made manly with room for clumsy fingers! Send damn you! No- what? The weather in Siberia?! How? Help! Oh. It worked!

    Cheers,

    Dave.
