    Pitman/gear puller

    hey all,

I will soon be takling steering box remove replace. Im looking for advice on a good brand of puller to remove the pitman arm. I have looked at the Snap-on ones (2 jaw, bar type) but at a rating of only 6t, I wonder if it will be up to the job.

I need to know CURRENT brand and model number so I can source one.

    cheers,
    Serg

still FBH, no, I am not joking or messing with you in any way shape or form.
    It works better with 2...

theres 2 knobs on the arm that the OEM puller is ment to engage on put the extra big FBH on the one of those you cant get a good swing at, warm up the pitman arm with a hot air gun (wifes hairdrier with a hanky over the intake will do) then smack the other side with the other FBH.

you can also just get a standard bearing puller onto it or you can come and borrow my hydraulic puller.

I would not have thought that the shock be good for the steering box, yes I know im not reusing mine....unless I find it can be successfully rebuilt at a later date. Im happy to buy a puller as im sure it can be used on other things.....

AFAIR, the single puller/arm set that is required for the pitman arm fits no other job on a landy...

TradeTools - 66622-FORCE HYDRAULIC GEAR PULLER SET

Thats where I'd be spending my money is your situation.

    Guys
Here's a tip:- I have seen and used it with success.

First seen in Guadalajara Mexico, where I send stg boxes for re-conditioning. (They use genuine parts for the recon)

Remove the nut, obtain a nice piece of hardwood like oak/lignum vitae about 1/1/2 thick and about 9" square.

Place the box with Pitman arm so that the threaded sector shaft is resting on the wood. An assistant holding the assembly balanced & erect.

Postion the arm so that you have a good spot to whack it with a BFH.
Then whack it with a 5 lbs BFH. while a matey boy holds it (un audante Mexicano preferiblemente)

    It falls off every time!

Don't ever be tempted belt the threaded end it will mushroom like a Mexican hat (un Chorro)

Hope that might give you blokes the push to try it!
    (entonses andele pues!)

Hope you like the the Spanish lesson too!

I used a KC Tools 10729 Pitman arm puller see this link.
Pitman Arm | KC Tools - Tools to last a lifetime
purchased at my local Auto One.

It seemed to be the only one like this that would straddle the bumps on the body of the pitman arm and fit between the top of the Pitman arm and the the body of the steering box on my Disco 1 (the feet were slightly thinner) The arm came off really easily (maybe I was just lucky) but it had been soaked in ATF for quite a few years...

It was a tight fit but did the job!

    cheers

I've got the set that Dave mentions and it's been great for all sorts things. Be sure to get an actual hydraulic puller - a guy on here bought one cheap from somewhere and while it looked the same, there were no hydraulics inside!
At any given point in time, somewhere in the world someone is working on a Land-Rover.

I bought one of those specifically for the job (about 12mnths ago) and broke it on the first use trying to get the pitman arm off my broken steering box so I could take it apart. heat and 2 hammers did it in the end.
