    Timing v8 3.5

I've just fitted a new gas mixer and have been messing around trying to set the mixture. Was running appallingly with little power, missing on acceleration. Checked the timing (with vacuum advance disconnected), then out of curiosity I gave the dizzy a tweak to advance and got improvement, tweaked it more and got lots more performance. I Havnt checked it with the light yet but it surprised me how much I advanced it beond where it's supposed to be.
I've heard of timing your engine by ear and might give this a go, but I'm worried about damage through pinging. Would the sound be obvious to me on this engine? Any ideas?

Pinging is a loud clattering noise under load that might be masked by an overly loud exhaust. On gas its unlikely a standard compression 3.5 will ping unless badly carboned up. I suggest you use a timing light to check your advance is working properly at revs, sometimes the mechanism seizes and the only way for the engine to perform well is for adjusting massive static advance. Also check the vacuum advance. With a normally working dissy advance you should be able to run 6 to 12 degrees BTDC at idle no probs.

I was running mine on petrol at 6 degrees for a long time, since that's what the manual said. Then I started advancing it a little at a time and was surprised by what a difference it made. I'm at about 12 degrees now.
At any given point in time, somewhere in the world someone is working on a Land-Rover.

I have always aimed for about 12deg BTDC in my rovers.
