    Defender TD5 Ownership

    Gday all,

I am looking to buy a TD5 03 to 06. Have previously owned a defender through work but obviously there's significant difference between new & 2nd hand. Recently I've come across the EGR removal in TD5's. Has anyone removed their EGR system couple of years ago and done any significant mileage to determine any issues. I have read enough info on this subject but fail to find anyone who's removed the EGR and taken their vehicle offroad to notice any engine issues?
Also the availability of parts around Brisbane north, would hate to knock the dealer doors. Hear MR guys at Redcliff are good, any others?

Would appreciate feedbacks with facts. Cheers.

Not sure why you are majoring on the EGR its the least of your worries
Id be more interested in Plastic Dowells in the head, oil pump bolts, exhaust manifolds and DMF flywheels

Fact removed the EGR 18 Months ago and have had no issues
Not sure why I would the. EGR has the same effect on road as it does off road.

If fuctioning normally they dont cause too many issues if misbehaving they cause bad running and other peculiarities.

The reason I removed mine was because the sometimes fall apart allowing the guts of the EGR to end up in the cylinders with predictably expensive results.

Parts are easy not sure about Brisbane you can get parts from good parts suppliers in Australia without issue or if it gets expensive you can get them from the UK

The EGR has been out of my 06 defender since the day it was brand new. It now has over 60k with no issues.

Parts from the uk will be your best bet, try and find a EGR blank with a fitting for a boost gauge as it saves time later if you fit it as you need to get the fitting welded in.

    Cheers

Agree that the EGR is a small issue - mine has been out for a long time with no down side - and my 2004 TD5 130 has abt 230K on the clock. And removing the EGR lets you remove a couple of metres of coolant hose which simplifies things no end. DPF is off - also the heat guard on the turbo and the engine cover.

Biggest issue is the oil pump bolt. Mine was not tight and had no threadlocker but was checked and tightened and locked before it came off. (Thanks to advice from this forum.)

The other big issue is whether it has overheated at any time. Mine has a temperature alarm and I know it has never overheated - which is probably why at 230K the TD5 engine has required nothing more than routine maintainance (and removal of the unnecessary bits mentioned above). But the routine maintainance has always been done. BTW, clutch, gearbox and transfer case all untouched - but there is an oil leak.....

However I note comments by Justin on this forum that it might be abt time to pull the head off and replace the gasket etc. Plan to do this in the next few months

Not really an issue with the EGR. I removed mine a while back with no appreciable difference, other than for the reaons as stated above.

By the way, my '03 Fender will be on the market in a few months time. 165000 odd kays. Heaps of extras. Let me know if you're interested.
