D1 rotoflex tailshaft to RRC uni-uni tailshaft swap?

As the title hints, what's involved with swapping a D1 tailshaft to a RRC shaft? Specifically, how hard is the drive flange to get out of the diff? The RRC is at the local self serve wreckers so if I need special tools etc then I might just leave it for now. If I was to get the RRC shaft, how hard is changing the unis? home job with a press or more involved?

    Cheers,
    Jeff

Uni's are so easy it's not even funny, you need a vice and a suitably sized socket (about same diameter as the caps) adn then use that to press them in. As to the tailshatf, nver experienced that so won't try and advise.

Getting the tailshaft and 4-bolt flange of the diff will be straight forward. The nut that holds the flange to the pinion can be a real bugger to undo though, so bring your breaker bar, extensions, swear jar, blocks to stop the RR from moving etc while trying to undo it.

In terms of special tools, it will be trying to get the centralising spigot out of the 3 bolt flange on the Disco that is a royal PITA. I ended up taking to mine with an angle grinder with a cutting disc and splitting the 3 bolt flange - this was after trying everything with pullers, but not the proper puller to do it with.

    This should help

Pictures of a Uni joint conversion

As to doing uni joints - you can also use a large g-clamp and some sockets. If you find that the propshaft has different size uni's to the Disco1, don't get too excited - easy to find at CBC. ( Remember to point the grease nipples the right way)

ps If you grab the flange from the wreckers - don't forget the spacer ring behind the flange)

I got the central stub out with a slide hammer and M8 attachment and relative ease. Probably a bigger slide hammer than most though.

Swapping to a RRC tail shaft seems like a great idea. My rubber donut is starting to scare me. Anyone want to sell me one?

(I never have any luck with wreckers)

I got rid of mine because I was breaking them while playing silly buggers, but I'd love to put one back in again.

I thought that I heard once quite a while ago something about the Commodore V8 (LS1) having a rotoflex on the back of the gearbox and that it is a thicker rotoflex than the one on the Land Rover. I really don't know if they fit, but could be worth investigating.

I think I'd either buy a Land Rover donut or swap to a uni joint. In between options seem a bit sketchy for my liking...
