Replacement Starter Motor
Hi All,
Just some advice please ......
I have 1981 RRC 3.5 ltre Auto (3 speed Borg Warner) and are having
problems with starter motor .....looks like its on the way out.
Want to upgrade it to Disco (series 1) reduction gear type unit for a V8i (around 1996)
My question is will it be a straight bolt on replacement and is the wiring the same, and will there be any issues with mine being an auto.
I believe it was a Winterbotton Fauls conversion done for the cocky s here in WA when it was sold.
Does anyone know the model I ask for as I rang several places for pricing and they said that there were two units available and to check the serial number on my current unit.
Since I don't have a Disco anymore
that's not an option, or should I unbolt my unit and take it in although they will be different anyway,
Appreciate your thoughts ....
Cheers

I think all Land Rover V8 starter motors fit all variations of the engine. My '79 RRC has a late Disco starter on it. Auto or manual makes no difference.

Replacement Starter Motor
Hi Bee Utey,
Rung my local auto electrician since I posted on forum.
Suprisingly they are cheaper than some aftermarket Landrover specialists here in Perth.
Been quoted between $300 + GST (local Auto electrician) to $480 + GST
(Landrover specialists) Repco $600+
Local electrician says they only show RR from 85 onwards and there are two types ......he's not sure why could be auto / manual gear box
Price $335.00c inc GST other ones $400.00c inc GST.
I agree with you from what I gather they were all the same, but he's asked me to pull out the old one and get the seriel number from it so we get the right one.
Appreciate your knowledge on Landrovers
Cheers

The only difference I can think of is the wiring for points ignition, some starters have an extra terminal to disconnect a ballast resistor circuit in the points wiring. My RR is electronic ignition, doesn't have any points wiring and uses an auto disco starter in a manual. The ring gears on auto and manual engines are exactly the same position and diameter.
Some sedans (early model Rover saloons) had the solenoid hanging down instead of horizontal, it still fits the LR but will foul the front driveshaft on bumps.
