    defender rear output leak

I had an oily handbrake, so after checking here as to the possible cause, I armed myself with a new seal, flange, 3 litres of syntrax and a clever friend. (I'm not that clever with insides of machines)

We used this to giude us:
LT230 rear output seal replacement - LR4x4 - The Land Rover Forum

On taking the flange off we found, The nut holding on was not much more than finger tight, and that it's washer has been stuck into the flange with silvery silicone stuff, and that the oil leak seemed to be coming along the shaft and not from the seal. Also there appears not to be a felt washer. We decided to try first to put it all back together as it had been and to tighten the nut up to the required torque and see if the leak remains and thats how things are now.
So, should there be a felt washer? ( it's a '97 130DC ) and is the washer supposed to be stuck into the flange, and if it is ,where does the felt washer
    go?
I hope this all makes some kind of sense.

There was a recall on some Pumas for this problem. I believe the fix was a high grade gasket sealant such as a Loktite product, designed for such applications.

Land Rover haven't really learnt from previous models. We bought an Isuzu new years ago and this had the same problem from new, once fixed, no further problems

    Thanks Bundalene.
So, if it continues to leak, what do I do? Find and fit a felt washer, and if so where do I fit it? Surely the pressure of the torqued up nut would crush the felt flat. I can't find a drawing that accurately shows where it's placed. I suppose another option would be to unglue the steel washer and reglue it around the shaft, but i'm not sure about that either. Any Ideas anyone?
