    Very brief temp spikes

    So, I have a temp probe in the head of my 300tdi, and it usually sits between 70 and 80 degrees.

    Every now and then however, it will jump up to something like 120 degrees for one or two seconds at the most, setting the alarm off, and then it won't happen again for a couple of weeks.

    Any ideas?

    Ive seen your vehicle...

    most likely its an electrical problem.

    I was thinking electrical too. Not sure how it would create a temp spike reading, instead of just switching the guage off altogether or blowing a fuse. Any ideas?

    dicey connection to the sender or an intermittant high resistance joint to the power supply to the gauge.

    But not high resistance enough to blow a fuse?

    high resistances dont blow fuses, low ones do.

    I think I need to read some textbooks, because although I'm learning, it won't do to be ignorant of simple stuff like that.

    I'll give troubleshooting a shot myself first, but I'll probably get stuck and take you up on your offer. Any more chassis need lifting?
